Most conversations about tech focus on what it can build. This Earth Day we are reflecting on what technology can protect. At Compal, we've been exploring that question on the ground through our operations in Brazil. Through our partnership with the University of the State of Amazonas (UEA), we support two environmental monitoring projects named after figures from Amazonian folklore. Curupira is an intelligent forest-monitoring system that uses sensors and AI to detect threats like illegal logging, chainsaw activity, smoke, and heavy machinery in remote areas, sending alerts for real-time response. Yara (named for the Amazonian water spirit) monitors river water quality across the Amazon basin, tracking temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, and other indicators in locations that are otherwise difficult and expensive to reach. One watches the forest. The other watches the water. Together, they represent a practical approach to conservation built on local technology and AI. We also support the Green Factory program within the Uatumã Sustainable Development Reserve, connecting Industry 4.0 manufacturing principles with sustainable community production inside the reserve itself. As one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers, our environmental footprint starts with our own operations. These partnerships inform how we think about environmental risk more broadly. Compal follows the TNFD framework to assess biodiversity dependencies and impacts across our facilities and Tier 1 supply chain. In 2023, we published our Biodiversity and No Deforestation Policy, committing to no net loss.
