I had just wrapped up a meeting with a partner, exhausted, ready to get back to my apartment. I opened Uber, requested a ride, and then. nothing. My card was declined 🥵. I tried again. Same result. I checked my bank app. Blocked. No warning, no notification, just. blocked. The kind of thing banks do when their system sees activity from a foreign country and decides, without asking you, that it must be fraud. There I was. Stranded in a city where cash is an afterthought and everything runs on cards. No ride. No food. No backup. Just me, my laptop, and a growing sense of panic.
