Research leadership is changing, and philanthropy must change with it. In a new article for Alliance magazine, our Elsevier Foundation Executive Director Ylann Schemm reflects on two decades of change across global research and health equity. From supporting women scientists through The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), to strengthening South–South collaboration with TWAS – The World Academy of Sciences and expanding research access and capacity through Research4Life, the article explores how long-term, trust-based partnerships can help build more inclusive and locally led research systems. Philanthropy has an opportunity, and responsibility, to move beyond short-term projects and invest in sustainable systems, local expertise and shared decision-making. India has one of the world’s strongest pipelines of women STEM graduates, with 42.6% of graduates in STEM fields being women – above the global average. Yet many women still face barriers to advancing in research, innovation and leadership roles. Evidence from around the world shows that more gender-equal research systems lead to stronger innovation outcomes. Diverse teams improve collective intelligence, strengthen problem-solving, and produce more impactful solutions. As #India works toward its Viksit Bharat 2047 ambitions, sustained investment in gender equality frameworks, institutional support and inclusive innovation systems will be essential to unlocking the country’s full intellectual capital. Advancing science and innovation means creating opportunities for everyone to contribute and thrive. We were in Berlin this week, taking part in the Falling Walls Foundation Female Science Talents program – an initiative creating opportunities for scientists to connect, collaborate and strengthen their leadership in research and innovation. We're so proud of this partnership! Programs like these help build more inclusive scientific communities and support the people driving progress across science and healthcare. It was fantastic to meet the talented 2026 cohort (20 talented researchers selected from more than 600 applications!) to exchange ideas, build networks and explore pathways for leadership and impact. Congratulations to all participants, and the team behind the program! 👏 #WomenInScience #ResearchLeadership #ScientificInnovation Julia Milbredt, Sonja Langela, Julia Struzik, Andreas Kosmider Bayer Foundation VolkswagenStiftung Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation. 📸 Ole Spata

Corporate philanthropy often operates on short timelines – but the challenges it seeks to address, like global health disparities, demand sustained commitment. Shifting from visibility-driven projects to long-term partnerships can unlock more meaningful impact. By investing in local expertise and co-creating solutions, organizations can help strengthen systems, not just fund interventions. At the Elsevier Foundation, we’ve seen how multi-year collaborations build trust, deepen knowledge and contribute to a more inclusive global research ecosystem. It’s about spending better, and staying engaged long enough to see real change.
