Over ons

The Rural Sociology Group researches the dynamics of food provisioning, agrarian change, and rural and regional development from an international comparative perspective. We give particular focus to understanding the various levels at which transformation processes take place and how they are influenced. We also examine the diverse actors, institutions, and modes of political organization engaged in these processes. Our analysis of these transformations is approached from a variety of critical sociological perspectives, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Together with Maya Declich I am editing a book 📗 on #CommunitySupportedAgriculture (#CSA). This book will consist of three parts: 1.   Foundations and principles of CSA, such as solidarity, food sovereignty, building local food communities, and sustainable production practices (e.g., agroecological, organic and regenerative methods). 2.   The performance and impact of CSA, including reducing the environmental impact, promoting social inclusion and justice, improving access to and affordability of healthy food, and contributing to food system transformation. 3.   CSA practices from a global perspective, highlighting concrete individual CSA cases and CSA models from different parts of the world 🗺️. For Part 1 of the book we have confirmations for all chapters we envisaged, but we are still looking for contributions for Parts 2 and 3. For Part 2 we are looking for contributions addressing the following topics and questions: a)   Do CSAs strengthen producer-consumer or urban -rural relations? b)   Are CSAs better capable of delivering (specific) #EcosystemServices? c)   Are CSAs characterized by less #EnvironmentalImpact (in production, processing, distribution, waste)? d)   Do CSAs help to improve #access to and #affordability of food? e)   Are CSAs more socially #inclusive or are specific groups #excluded from participation? f)    Does participation in CSAs result in #dietarychange and are there other #health and #wellbeing benefits? g)   What is known about #labour conditions and #work satisfaction? h)   Is it financially #profitable/#viable for farmers/producers to engage in CSAs? i)    How #resilient or #vulnerable are CSA, especially in times of #shocks and #crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic? j)    Does CSA participation lead to durable/sustainable changes in #foodpractices? k)   What is the #transformative #capacity of CSAs to contribute to structural food system changes? If you are interested to contribute to the book with a chapter on one of these topics, please get in contact with us via csa.book@wur.nl or send me a DM on this platform. The same holds true for a contribution with a chapter on a specific CSA case or model for Part 3. And if you know of someone who might be interested to contribute, please forward or notify about this post.

  • This paper by Dawn Cheong and Bettina Bock critically reframes agricultural sustainability by centring women farmers’ lived realities of reproductive health and social reproduction. It raises urgent questions about how labour burdens, care responsibilities, and bodily constraints shape access to and outcomes of “sustainable” agricultural innovations.

    Profiel weergeven voor Daun C.

Have you ever thought about how women farmers navigate the challenges of reproductive health (menstruation, prenatal, postpartum, and perimenopause/menopause) and social reproduction (childbirth, child & elder care, unpaid domestic labour, livestock management, ritual and communal maintenance, and farmers' group activities) in relation to climate-smart and conservation agriculture? Imagine you have to transplant or weed in a constant squatting position under the scorching sun, with no shade in sight, at 40°C with 70–80% humidity. All this while you are menstruating, pregnant, or recovering from childbirth, or while navigating severe perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms including hot flashes, extreme fatigue, insomnia, and depression. Would you be able to happily adopt innovations, despite all these physical challenges and overwhelming labor burdens? If so, we must ask: Whose labour truly subsidises sustainable agriculture? Are we innovating for you, or are we innovating at your expense? When we talk about agricultural sustainability, the focus is often on the environmental or economic spheres. However, in places where the majority of agricultural production relies on subsistence smallholder farming, farmers' labour sustainability and wellbeing are core components in leading and managing environmental and economic sustainability. In this research, we revealed that even when provided with the same opportunities, not all women farmers are able to translate them into desired outcomes. The lack of social and institutional interventions to redistribute and reorganize reproductive labour not only functions as a structural barrier preventing women from fully leveraging their productive capabilities but also risks compounding the depletion of women's well-being and, ultimately, the sustainability of agrarian society. https://lnkd.in/dB5CJtU9 #agriculturalsustainability #capabilites #climateresilientinnovation #genderedagrarianlabour #reproductivehealth #socialreproduction

🌱 Seminar Series ‘Theorizing Post-Capitalism’ | Part 1, with Julia Spanier RSO@CSPS and the Foodscapes Cluster invite you to a seminar by Julia Spanier: ‘Surviving within capitalism: “peri-capitalist” agri-food initiatives in Germany and the Netherlands’. In this talk, Julia Spanier explores agri-food initiatives — particularly community-supported agriculture (CSA) — as spaces of post-capitalist transformation within the realities of a capitalist food economy and growth-oriented society. The seminar will reflect on both the transformative potential and the structural challenges of alternative food networks, including accessibility, precarious labour conditions, and the possibilities opened up through degrowth perspectives and engaged research practices. 📅 Thursday May 21 🕔 17.00 – 18.30 📍 B0081 Leeuwenborch, Wageningen Campus Mark Vicol, Rural Sociology
