Ghost nets may weigh little, but their impact on marine biodiversity is devastating. This #BiodiversityDay, Healthy Seas is highlighting why #marinelitter cannot be measured by kilograms alone. During a recent mission with Ghost Diving and SDSS: The Society for Documentation of Submerged Sites, our team found at least 8 dead turtles and several large fish trapped in an abandoned net entangled on a #shipwreck. Lightweight ghost gear can keep killing marine life for years while damaging fragile #underwater ecosystems. Protecting #biodiversity means removing these silent threats before they cause even more harm. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d-A8iWE9 #HealthySeas #GhostNets #MarineConservation #OceanProtection

Over ons
Healthy Seas is a foundation based in the Netherlands whose mission is to remove marine litter from the seas, particularly fishing nets, to create healthier seas and to recycle marine litter into textile products with the help of our partners. We operate worldwide (from the US to Korea or New Zealand). Since its founding in 2013 (10 years!), Healthy Seas has collected over 905 tons of fishing nets and other marine litter with the help of volunteer divers and fishers.

What starts as abandoned equipment can quickly become a serious hazard. A ghost fish cage was spotted drifting in a shipping lane near #Ithaca, Greece posing risks to maritime #safety, local #communities, and the #marineenvironment. Together with Hyundai Motor Company, Healthy Seas stepped in to remove and clean up the structure before the tourist season began. This is a clear reminder that ghost aquaculture is not only an environmental issue, but also a safety and community challenge that requires collective action. #GhostFarms #AbandonedAquaculture #Aquaculture #MarineLitter #Trash #CircularEconomy #PlasticPollution #OceanCleanup

Not every ghost net should be removed ? A new #study initiated by the Healthy Seas Foundation and conducted by Wageningen University & Research shows that while some #ghostnets continue harming marine life, others can become important #habitats for #marine species, including protected ones. The #underwater fieldwork that made this #research possible was carried out by Ghost Diving, whose expertise continues to drive more informed ghost net clean-up efforts. These findings help us to further strengthen diver training and field protocols, all for more effective and environmentally responsible action. 🌊 Before forests, before animals, before humans… there was plankton. Often invisible, rarely celebrated, plankton is the foundation of life on Earth. In this episode of the Healthy Seas Podcast, ocean advocate and author Vincent Doumeizel explains why these microscopic drifters may be the most important organisms on the planet. For 3.5 billion years, plankton has shaped our world, producing oxygen, regulating the climate, powering the carbon cycle, and supporting the entire marine food web. But this invisible system is under pressure. Rising temperatures, acidification, and pollution are already changing plankton communities, with consequences that could ripple across ecosystems and accelerate climate change. 🎧 Listen to learn with Vincent Doumeizel: • Why plankton is the true foundation of life on Earth • How microscopic organisms regulate climate and biodiversity • What happens when plankton communities shift • Why understanding plankton could unlock future solutions 🎙️ Hosted by Crystal DiMiceli , Becoming Forces for Nature Listen now: 🎧 #Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dXaPpnpe 🎧 #YouTube: https://lnkd.in/d7AVpYQD 🎧 #Apple Podcasts: https://lnkd.in/dZjs6dMi #HealthySeas #OceanConservation #Plankton #MarineBiodiversity #Podcast

"I was passing through…" For sea turtles, this isn’t fiction. It’s a reality happening on this net. This #ghostnet did not stop fishing when it was lost. It became a deadly trap. Right now, we’re working together with Ghost Diving and SDSS: The Society for Documentation of Submerged Sites to remove this ghost net tangled around a wreck in the Mediterranean. Because the ocean shouldn’t be a minefield of our waste. Big thanks to DWS Group , for making this project possible. #MarineConservation #OceanConservation #SeaTurtles #MediterraneanSea #HealthySeas #SDSS #GhostDiving #Turtle

Just 10 days after a previous cleanup, the tide had already brought a shocking amount of debris back to Little Palm Beach in Hong Kong. Together with local volunteers, we removed around 100 kg of waste, including ghost nets, single-use plastics, medical waste, broken boat parts, and even abandoned kayaks. A huge thank you to our supporter DWS Group for making initiatives like this possible, and to the team from Ghost Diving Hong Kong and local helpers on the field for their incredible effort and commitment to cleaner seas. This cleanup was another reminder that marine litter is a constant challenge, and that continued action, awareness, and collaboration are essential to protect the seas. 🌊♻️ #OceanConservation #MarineDebris #GhostNets #PlasticPollution #Environment #CorporateSustainability #Volunteering #Community #HongKong

🌊🏊 Sport and healthy waters go hand in hand. We’re proud to partner with the UltraEbre Swim Marathon 2026 as Environmental Partner, helping to spotlight the vital connection between open-water sport and the ecosystems it depends on. From seas to rivers, healthy aquatic environments are essential, not only for biodiversity, but for the communities and athletes who rely on them. Through this collaboration, swimmers will receive educational materials in their race packs, encouraging awareness, creativity, and action to help protect our waters. At Healthy Seas, we work to remove marine litter such as ghost fishing nets, prevent future waste through education, and inspire action for cleaner waters. Together with UltraEbre Swim Marathon 2026, we’re connecting athletic achievement with environmental responsibility. 💙
