GCF is the world's climate fund for developing countries. #ClimateAction

소개

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the world's climate fund for developing countries. GCF helps developing countries limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change. It seeks to promote a paradigm shift to low-emission and climate-resilient development, taking into account the needs of nations that are particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. It was set up by the 194 countries who are parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2010, as part of the Convention’s financial mechanism. It aims to deliver equal amounts of funding to mitigation and adaptation, while being guided by UNFCCC's principles and provisions. When the Paris Agreement was reached in 2015, GCF was given an important role in serving the agreement and supporting the goal of keeping global temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius. Responding to the climate challenge requires collective action from all countries, including by both public and private sectors. Among these concerted efforts, advanced economies have agreed to jointly mobilise significant financial resources. Coming from a variety of sources, these resources address the pressing mitigation and adaptation needs of developing countries. #ClimateAction

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula is home to thousands of plant and wildlife species—from coral reefs and seagrass beds to mangroves, wetlands, and cenotes. Together, these ecosystems form a natural barrier against climate impacts, helping protect communities and livelihoods. But they are under threat from intensifying climate change and unsustainable human activities. GCF is working with the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature and the Government of Mexico to deliver capital and partner for impact, supporting local communities and authorities to take #ClimateAction. This #BiodiversityDay, swipe ➡️ to learn how local ACCIÓN and sustainable finance can strengthen long-term conservation and climate resilience.

Deepening engagement with Indigenous Peoples at GCF to boost partnerships for impact 🤝 GCF convened the 8th meeting of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Group (IPAG-8) in Songdo this week, advancing dialogue on Indigenous Peoples’ engagement in climate finance. Discussions focused on GCF’s Indigenous Peoples Policy, outcomes from the Global Conference with Indigenous Peoples, enhanced access to climate finance, and inputs to GCF’s next strategic planning period. GCF continues to work with Indigenous Peoples as partners in shaping climate solutions grounded in rights, knowledge, and leadership.

Visited a Green Climate Fund-financed project in beautiful Armenia together with Karin Juhlin and Leif Holmberg from the Swedish government - and saw firsthand how climate finance can work at scale through local financial systems. Through the partnership between GCF and EBRD, the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) is helping local banks provide financing to SMEs and households for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate-resilient investments. What makes this model particularly powerful is that it goes beyond individual projects — it helps create markets for green finance. By combining concessional climate finance with domestic banking systems, the program is mobilising private capital, strengthening local financial institutions, and supporting long-term economic competitiveness. In Armenia alone: • USD 101 million in financing deployed through 10 financial institutions • Nearly 875,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions reductions expected • Hundreds of climate-resilient assets financed • Nearly 400 loan officers trained in green finance I was especially encouraged to hear directly from SMEs about how access to financing for rooftop solar PV (picture), energy efficiency, and modern technologies is reducing costs, improving resilience, and strengthening businesses. At a time of constrained public resources, these kind of initiatives show how climate finance can deliver triple dividends: climate action, private sector development, and stronger financial systems — while mobilising significantly larger volumes of private investment. A strong example of how partnerships between international institutions, local banks, and businesses can translate global climate ambition into tangible local impact. https://lnkd.in/gK92SZs8

From extreme heat and floods to air pollution and water insecurity, climate risks are already health risks. The World Health Organization’s accreditation to GCF opens new pathways to scale climate finance for more resilient health systems. By combining GCF’s ability to deliver climate finance at scale with WHO’s public health expertise and country-level reach, we can support countries in establishing and strengthening climate-resilient health services where they are needed most. As the World Health Assembly (#WHA79) kicks off this week and discussions about urgent global health challenges come to the fore, we spotlight how GCF and WHO can partner for impact. 🔽 Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health

The Africa Forward Summit advanced a vision that GCF shares: stronger partnerships, coordinated financing, and investment models that drive value creation within Africa. GCF, as the world’s climate fund for developing countries, has invested over $7.5 billion in Africa, helping unlock $25 billion in climate finance over the past decade. And we are ready to do more with committed #climateaction partners like France 🇫🇷 and Kenya 🇰🇪, the co-hosts of #AfricaForward, to help the continent realise a resilient and prosperous future. At the Summit's plenary session on 'An international financial architecture in support of Africa’s development', our Executive Director emphasised GCF's unique capacity to work with the widest breadth of partners to strengthen national institutions and deliver climate finance at scale through country-driven and regional platforms. Alongside recent reforms, these have enabled us to build a system capable of matching Africa's ambition with delivery. More of Mafalda Duarte's insights fresh from the Summit this week. ⏬

On the sidelines of the #AfricaForward Summit, GCF and The World Bank Group signed a Funded Activity Agreement for the ASCENT-GREEN programme to expand access to clean energy across Eastern and Southern Africa. Approved at GCF's 44th Board meeting in March, the ASCENT-GREEN programme is now moving to implementation. It will cover 21 countries through distributed renewables, clean cooking, and productive energy use via a private sector-led delivery mechanism. GCF's $250 million investment, part of the overall Mission 300 initiative, will help catalyse nearly $700 million in blended finance, with further mobilisation expected from the private sector. As the world's climate fund for developing countries, GCF helps take on early risk to mobilise investment and works with partners to ensure clean energy solutions reach communities. By bridging public and private finance, we are committed to supporting transformative systems change that advance energy access as a foundation for resilient growth across Africa. #ClimateAction

A new agreement is moving a landmark program into implementation. ASCENT-GREEN will expand clean and affordable energy access across Eastern and Southern Africa. There is no development or climate transition without energy access, and no energy access for the hardest-to-reach without capital willing to take the first risk. That is what the Green Climate Fund brings. Our $250 million is structured to crowd in over a billion dollars more from the The World Bank Group, private investors, and other partners, reaching 21 countries and more than 40 million people who have been waiting too long for energy access and clean cooking. ASCENT-GREEN is one of the largest single programs under Mission 300, and it shows what finance for development and climate does best. https://lnkd.in/g4ahKFMk

Happy #ArganiaDay! On the ground in Morocco, the GCF Team saw firsthand the impact of our first climate project in the country. During a recent field mission, the GCF Team witnessed how communities cultivate argan trees, diversify crops such as capers, build rainwater harvesting structures, and strengthen women-led argan value chains. The site in the commune of Ouled Mrabet has become a showcase for wider development. It has helped attract additional funding, while also serving as a learning space for Master’s and PhD students studying arganiculture. With ANDZOA’s participatory approach, women have become increasingly active in the fields and across the argan value chain. At a women’s cooperative in Ounagha, the GCF Team saw how argan is processed into cosmetic and edible products—from raw seeds to finished goods. GCF will continue to engage with the government 🇲🇦, ANDZOA, the Agency for Agricultural Development, and local farmers to advance sustainable arganiculture in degraded areas. At the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 in Astana 🇰🇿, GCF engaged with Central Asian countries and partners on a shared priority of turning climate plans into #ClimateAction. The Summit provided a platform for the GCF Team to explore approaches with regional and national institutions in enhancing access to climate finance and strengthening Readiness support. A key moment was the signing of an MoU with the Development Bank of Kazakhstan, opening opportunities for private sector mobilisation and green economy momentum in the country. GCF also co-convened the Ministerial Roundtable on Climate Investment Pathways in Central Asia with the Government of Kazakhstan and UNDP, bringing ministers, IFIs, and partners together to discuss finance-ready projects and regional platforms. As the world’s climate fund for developing countries, GCF will continue boosting country ownership, direct access, and regional cooperation. Morocco’s argan forests have long supported livelihoods, especially for rural women. But climate change and rising demand for argan oil are putting pressure on one of the country’s most important natural defences against desertification. Ahead of #ArganiaDay, we spotlight how GCF partners for impact with Morocco to turn argan from a pressured forest resource into a climate-smart livelihood system.
