Jamalco is a joint venture between Century Aluminum and Clarendon Alumina Production Limited producing alumina

About us

Jamalco is a joint venture between General Alumina Jamaica Limited (a subsidiary of Century Aluminum Company) and Clarendon Alumina Production Limited (a wholly owned Government company) with a focus on bauxite mining and alumina production. Jamalco started as a bauxite mining venture by Alcoa in 1959 and exported its first shipment of bauxite in 1963. The venture began alumina production at a new refinery in Halse Hall, Clarendon in 1972 with a production capacity of 500,000 metric tonnes per year (mtpy), which it exported from its port facility at Rocky Point. The refinery’s capacity was upgraded to 1 million mtpy in 1999 and then to 1.25 million mtpy in 2003. The last expansion was in 2007 to 1,416,700 mtpy. In May 2023, Century Aluminum Company acquired General Alumina Jamaica Limited, which owns 55 percent of the joint venture and Clarendon Alumina Production Limited retains its 45 percent ownership of the joint venture. What We Do: Jamalco mines bauxite and refines it into alumina before it is exported from its Port at Rocky Point, Clarendon. Jamalco’s bauxite mines are located in South Manchester on the Mount Oliphant plateau and in Harmons Valley in Jamaica. The railhead from which bauxite is trammed to the refinery is located at St. Jago in Clarendon, Jamaica. The refinery is located at Halse Hall in Clarendon, Jamaica and the Port from which alumina is shipped is located at Rocky Point also in Clarendon, Jamaica.

  • Two major projects. One outstanding team. The successful completion of the Coarse Seed Filter Restoration and Air Compressor #4 projects highlights the strength, resilience and collaboration of our CapEx team and partners. From restoring critical systems to rebuilding stronger after the 2021 Powerhouse fire, these projects have improved reliability, increased efficiency and strengthened refinery operations. Completed in early 2026, these milestones reflect the dedication, expertise, and teamwork of everyone involved from planning through to execution. When teams align, great things happen. #Teamwork #StrongerTogether #OperationalExcellence #IlluminatingTheFuture

  • Jamalco was proud to participate in the NEXT S.T.A.G.E Career Day hosted by the JIE Secretariat UWI Mona Students’ Chapter, in collaboration with the Mona Engineering Society (MES) and the Faculty of Engineering Alumni Association Mona (FEAAM) at the University of the West Indies. Our team, Technical Services Superintendent Rachelle Wright, Senior Process Control Engineer Jayann Walters and Mechanical Reliability Engineer @Maurice Robinson Jr., had the opportunity to engage directly with engineering students through mock interview sessions, providing practical insights, real-world expectations and constructive feedback to help prepare them for the world of work. It was an energizing experience connecting with such a talented and motivated group of future engineers. We also shared information on the Jamalco Summer Internship Programme, encouraging students to take advantage of hands-on learning opportunities and positioning Jamalco as a place where growth and development across engineering disciplines are supported. Jamalco is pleased to play our part in supporting the development of the next generation. #EngineeringCareers #UWIMona #JIE #Internships #AluminatingTheFuture

  • Strong communities are built through collaboration, shared vision and purposeful action. Recently, Jamalco engaged community council members at our Annual Joint Community Council meeting, held at the Wembley Centre of Excellence. This important forum reaffirmed the critical role our council members play in maintaining strong, meaningful relationships between the company and the communities we serve. A key highlight was an engaging session led by our Jamalco Business Systems (JBS) team lead, Debbie-Ann Fagan-Warren BBA, MBA, CLSSBB where participants explored the theme “Strengthening Collaboration, Driving Action, Achieving Results.” The session challenged council members to deepen their partnerships, enhance engagement and take a more structured approach to achieving their community goals. Through interactive group work, led by Kwesi Stone, participants assessed community needs and developed practical 90-day action plans, demonstrating the power of teamwork and shared accountability in driving real progress. We remain committed to supporting the growth and development of our operating communities and value the continued partnership of our seven community councils. As shared during the session, meaningful change is only possible when we work together. #CommunityEngagement #CommunityDevelopment #AluminatingTheFuture

  • 39 years. One company. A legacy of excellence. Congratulations to Gorton Allen, Digestion Department Supervisor and Jamalco Milestone Awardee, whose journey reflects dedication, resilience, and a deep family connection to the company. A third-generation Jamalcoan, Gorton followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather when he joined the company in 1986. From his early days in the Powerhouse to leadership roles in Digestion, he has contributed to major operational successes, including the synchronization of Turbine Generator #3 and the development of a Heater Care model that continues to serve as a global template. Beyond technical excellence, Gorton is passionate about mentorship and building a supportive work environment where employees can grow and succeed. Thank you, Gorton, for nearly four decades of commitment to Jamalco’s journey. 🌟 #EmployeeRecognition #MilestoneAchievement #AluminatingTheFuture

  • Jamalco recently hosted a visit from Ghanaian representatives, Derrick Cobbinah, President of the Ghana–Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and Robert Sambian,  Chief Executive Officer of the Volta Aluminum Company Limited. The visit offered an opportunity for knowledge sharing and a closer look at Jamalco’s bauxite mining and alumina refining operations, including a tour of the refinery and port facilities. Conversations during the visit highlighted the potential for deeper collaboration between Jamaica and Ghana in the mining and aluminum industries. Moments like these remind us that partnerships and shared learning continue to drive innovation and progress in our sector. #GlobalPartnerships #Mining #AluminatingTheFuture
