# Automatically Check Out Files Upon Edit
  You can configure [!INCLUDE[ssManStudioFull](../includes/ssmanstudiofull-md.md)] to check out a file automatically when you begin editing it.  
  
### To configure automatic checkout  
  
1.  On the **Tools** menu, click **Options**.  
  
2.  Expand the **Source Control** folder, and then click **Environment**.  
  
3.  In the **Editing** box, select **Check out automatically**, and then click **OK**.
