On May 20, 2026, the Media Foundation for West Africa organised a one-day digital literacy training workshop in Lomé, Togo, for 40 women journalists and activists, with coordination support from our national partner in Togo, L'Union des Journalistes Indépendants du Togo (UJIT). Held at El Doria Hotel, the training forms part of the project, “Promoting Press Freedom and Women’s Digital Rights in Togo”, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana. The project aims to empower women journalists and activists to safely navigate and effectively leverage digital spaces, while strengthening their use of digital tools to enhance the impact of their work. The participants were taken through sessions on digital rights, social media and online privacy, women’s rights online in Togo, strategies for addressing online abuse and how to effectively use digital tools to enhance their work. The sessions were facilitated by Emmanuel Agbenonwossi, Digital Rights Expert and Innocente Gbekevi, Cybersecurity Expert. The opening ceremony of the workshop was marked by the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Communication and the Ministry of Social Affairs, Gender, and Child Protection, to whom we extend our deepest gratitude for honoring our invitation. "How do we protect truth without undermining freedom?"  That was the burning question at the center of the dialogue I MC’ed this week for World Press Freedom Day 2026. Hosted at the British High Commission Accra Commissioner’s residence, the evening brought together a powerful collective of senior journalists, media practitioners, fact-checkers, and policymakers to tackle the complex intersection of information integrity and democratic resilience in the digital age.  The British High Commission in Ghana and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands served as our hosts, fostering a vital space for constructive dialogue. As the UK takes on the global co-chairship of the Media Freedom Coalition, this event demonstrated that protecting the press is a shared international priority.  Key Moments from the Discourse: - Honoring the Brave: We observed a minute of silence for fallen journalists, a sobering reminder of the ultimate price some pay to keep the public informed.   - Combating Manipulation: We dived deep into how misinformation and foreign information manipulation (FIMI) pose growing risks to public trust and social cohesion.   - Action Over Statements: We explored practical ways to strengthen journalistic capacity and digital literacy to ensure Ghana remains a democratic leader in the region.  We cannot allow a "culture of silence" to take root when our collective future, and the accountability of our leaders, depends on a free and vibrant media landscape. Grateful to have steered this conversation as we work toward an information ecosystem built on integrity and peace.  #WPFD2026 #MediaFreedomCoalition #GhanaMedia #TheCostOfSilence #TruthMatters #InformationIntegrity #Apiorkor #UKinGhana #NLInGhana

  • The Agroforestry Technical Working Group (ATWG) recently convened in Tamale and Accra, bringing together stakeholders across government, civil society, and development partners to strengthen coordination on agroforestry in Ghana. In Tamale, discussions were grounded in field engagement across the Northern Region. Together with partners including Tree Aid and Green for Change, participants visited agroforestry and land restoration sites, engaged with farmer cooperatives, and connected with women-led shea processing groups. These exchanges highlighted both the progress being made and the challenges communities continue to face. Building on these field perspectives, the Accra convening focused on aligning priorities for agroforestry policy and implementation. The meeting brought together representatives from government institutions, development agencies, and key partners, including H.E. the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, the Ghana Forestry Commission, the Environmental Protection Authority, Ghana, the NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLANNING COMMISSION (NDPC)-GHANA, and others. Together, these engagements reinforced the importance of connecting field realities with policy action to advance sustainable land use, climate resilience, and inclusive economic development. Funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development), hosted by FAO, and convened by i4Policy in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the ATWG continues to strengthen partnerships that support sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems across cocoa and broader agricultural value chains. #Agroforestry #ClimateResilience #SustainableAgriculture #LandRestoration #ClimateAction #WomenInAgriculture #NLGHGrowingTogether  Anna Yeboah Boateng Rens Twijnstra Anneleen de Ruiter

We’re pleased to announce the selected artist for the Elmina Mural Residency 2026. After a highly competitive open call with submissions from across the Netherlands, Richard Kofi has been selected as the resident artist for this year’s program. Richard’s practice stood out for its thoughtful engagement with identity, history, and contemporary visual language. His approach reflects a strong sensitivity to place and narrative qualities that align closely with the vision of this residency. From June 1 - 8, 2026, he will be in Elmina collaborating with local artists to create large-scale murals across key public spaces. Together, they will explore and reinterpret the shared histories and evolving connections between Elmina and the Netherlands through public art. Timed ahead of the Edina Bakatue Festival, this residency contributes to an ongoing effort to shape Elmina’s visual landscape, bridging heritage and contemporary expression. We look forward to welcoming Richard Kofi to Elmina and to the stories that will unfold on its walls. A big thank you to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana for their support. From graduation to investment: A new milestone for Orange Corners Ghana 🇬🇭 We often talk about "deepening our commitment" to entrepreneurs. Yesterday, that commitment took a massive leap forward. The Africa Ecosystem Catalysts Facility - a partnership between the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank, and @Village Capital - has officially deployed its first $350K investment into the Ghanaian startup ecosystem. A huge congratulations to VDL Fulfilment, led by CEO Vanessa Omari! 🏆  As an alumna of Orange Corners Ghana and a winner of the Orange Corners Innovation Fund (OCIF), VDL is a shining example of what happens when talent meets the right support. They are receiving a $150K investment to scale their e-commerce logistics platform and support even more African SMEs. Seeing VDL scale from our OC training programme, to receiving $150K in growth capital is the ultimate "full-circle" moment. The second finalised investment from the Facility is Rivia Clinics, led by CEO Isidore Kpotufe, who received a $200K investment to expand affordable primary healthcare across Ghana. Together, these two companies are proving that locally-led solutions in logistics and healthcare are the keys to Ghana’s economic mobility. This is the next step in our mission to bridge the funding gap for early-stage entrepreneurs. By partnering with Village Capital, FMO, and RVO, we aren’t just training founders, we’re ensuring they have the capital to change the world. 🌍 The details: ✨ VDL Fulfilment: Scaling e-commerce logistics for SMEs ✨ Rivia Clinics: Expanding tech-enabled healthcare access ✨ The Facility: A $4M pilot unlocking capital across Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania Check out the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/gjxkhhjP #OrangeCorners #Entrepreneurship #Startups #Ghana #PrivateSectorDevelopment #ImpactInvesting #Innovation #SuccessStory

  • On this day, we recognize and commend the dedication of journalists around the world who courageously carry out their duties, often at great personal risk. As we reflect on this year’s World Press Freedom Day theme, "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security” the critical role of the media in sustaining peace and fostering informed societies cannot be overstated. Safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists are essential not only to achieving lasting peace, but also to reinforcing the value and impact of continued investment in a free and independent press. In an increasingly digital landscape, where misinformation and threats to information integrity are on the rise, alongside growing global security challenges, the Netherlands remains firmly committed to protecting both those who deliver the news and the credibility of the information they provide. We reaffirm our commitment to moving beyond words by making meaningful, practical investments that advance press freedom, not only in Ghana, but globally. • Last week, we proudly joined activities marking 50 years of the European Union in Ghana with a sustainability-themed cycling journey from Jubilee Park in Tamale to Accra, crossing seven regions along the way. The ride brought together European Ambassadors and diplomats from 10 EU Member States, all championing cycling as a sustainable mode of transport, promoting environmental awareness, and fostering cultural exchange. In the Bono Region, our Deputy Head of Mission, Ms. Wendy van Meel MBA connected with Netherlands Alumni in Sunyani and visited agricultural projects in Bono East. From Mangoase to Maampehia, she engaged with smallholder farmers and saw firsthand how improved skills and techniques are strengthening livelihoods. She also cycled from Techiman to Sunyani, paid a courtesy call on the Bono Regional Minister, and joined the “Tree for Life” planting initiative, contributing to climate resilience efforts. The journey concluded at the Embassy gardens in Accra with a vibrant closing ceremony, bringing together the diplomatic community, the Director General of the National Sports Authority Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, representing the Minister of Sports, passionate cyclists, and the inspiring “Gladiators” who completed the full ride from Tamale to Accra. We also spotlighted sustainability through an exciting fashion showcase by The Or Foundation. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this journey a success. We look forward to more collaborative efforts towards our common good.   #RideWithTeamEurope #Sustainability #TeamEUinGhana #CyclingForClimate #NlGhGrowingTogether
