AGRA Chairperson and former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, led an AGRA delegation on a courtesy call to H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in Kampala. The President commended AGRA for its contribution to strengthening food systems across Africa, noting our role in advancing science, innovation, and policy advocacy. President Museveni welcomed AGRA’s approach, highlighting its emphasis on modern, home‑grown farming methods that are better suited to local contexts, particularly in areas such as animal feed production. He further encouraged AGRA to strengthen its role in promoting practical, locally relevant solutions through research, strengthened seed systems, scientific innovation, and advocacy. AGRA has operated in Uganda since 2006, supporting the training of scientists, many of whom now hold key positions in national research and development institutions, including the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO). #AGRA #AGRAat20 #AGRAImpact

Yesterday marked a deeply meaningful milestone with the opening of the new AGRA Ethiopia Country office strategically located on the campus of International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and surrounded by a vibrant ecosystem of CGIAR centers. This is more than a physical move. It is a deliberate step into a space where science, innovation, and development #converge. Being embedded within this community creates powerful complementarities, linking AGRA’s farmer-centered work with world-class #research, data, and #partnerships that can accelerate impact across food systems in Africa. Over and above being hosted by ILRI, AGRA’s #MOU with the CGIAR reflects a #shared commitment: aligning research and delivery, strengthening country systems, and ensuring that innovation reaches the smallholder farmers who need it most. Having had the privilege of serving on the CGIAR board for four and a half years, returning in my new capacity as AGRA President carried special significance and it felt like a #homecoming within a community I deeply respect. Grateful to ILRI for hosting us, to Dr. Namukolo Covic, ILRI Representative in Ethiopia and CGIAR Africa Liason, representatives from the CGIAR centers on campus, the Ethiopian Government and Agrifood systems community and many other partners who joined us for the ceremony. I am extremely proud of the incredible #AGRAEthiopia team led by Yihenew Zewdie. As AGRA celebrates twenty years I can’t wait to see what we will build together from this new home at the heart of agricultural innovation. Onwards and upwards! When farmers prosper, Africa prospers! Yesterday in Hawassa, Ethiopia, the AGRA Board and Management, together with senior officials from the Sidama Region, conducted a strategic site visit to the Sidama Elito Farmers Cooperative Union to assess progress and implementation on the ground. The visit provided insights into the union’s integrated operational model, encompassing feed processing, mechanization services, school feeding programmes, and strengthened market linkages. These interventions collectively illustrate a scalable approach to inclusive agricultural transformation anchored in farmer‑led enterprise development. The engagement underscored the importance of coordinated leadership, institutional collaboration, and execution in translating agricultural ambitions into measurable outcomes. #AGRA #AGRAImpact #AGRAat20 Alice Ruhweza | Thule Lenneiye | Aggie Asiimwe Konde | Decimar Ogutu | Waeni Ngea

Agriculture drives about 25% of Africa’s GDP and employs nearly 60% of the continent's workforce, yet over 80% of agricultural land is degraded, limiting productivity and livelihoods. As Rufus IDRIS, AGRA's Country Director in Nigeria highlights, sustainable growth goes beyond fertilizer use. It requires understanding soil types, applying the right inputs, and restoring soil health as the foundation for long‑term productivity. With rising pressure from climate change, urbanization, and growing food demand, investing in soil health is no longer optional, it’s a strategic necessity. Reflecting on our March 9th International Women's Day forum in Maputo, it is clear that the path to a food-secure Africa runs directly through the empowerment of women. AGRA and partners gathered under the theme “Give Agency to Gain Growth: Scaling Women’s Impact Across Africa’s Agrifood Systems. This year, the UN recognizes what farmers, families and frankly the data have known and shown for a long time, that women are holding Africa's agrifood sector together, often without the rights, voice or resources that reflect that reality. 2026 we are building on momentum to close that gap structurally, the International Year of the Woman Farmer. By focusing on priority reforms and investments through partners, policymakers and financiers, we are working to ensure women move from the sidelines to the center of ownership and decision-making.   A major highlight of the day was the launch of the 2026 Women Agripreneurs of the Year Awards (WAYA2026), an awards program designed to elevate women agripreneurs with life-changing opportunities and prizes of up to USD $300,000. The application window is open to women agripreneurs transforming their communities across the continent. Application deadline : May 8th 2026 Apply here: https://lnkd.in/dV3rBjN7 #AGRA #AGRAImpact #Value4her #WAYA2026

Twenty years ago, AGRA was founded on a simple but urgent truth: Africa’s future depends on whether its farmers can thrive. At the Ethiopia High level convening on AGRA@20 we saw the results of that conviction. Ethiopia’s success proves that when we align leadership and investment, we deliver lasting change. In the words of H.E. Hailemariam Dessalegn, this next chapter is about action. It’s about ensuring farmers can reliably earn, grow, and build a future that lasts. #AGRA #AGRAImpact #AGRAat20

At the Ethiopia high-level convening on AGRA@20, conversations centered on what it takes to deliver lasting food systems transformation. Ethiopia is the blueprint. It proves that when government leadership, policy, and investment align, we stop dreaming about change and start delivering it at scale. As our President, Ms. Alice Ruhweza, highlighted during the convening: reaching farmers is just the starting point. The real goal is ensuring they can reliably earn, grow, and build a future that lasts. #AGRA #AGRAImpact #AGRAat20
