This week we marked Atos's 12th Global Accessibility Awareness Day, under the theme One World, Many Minds — Where Inclusion Accelerates Intelligence. Sarika Saxena hosted our session with James T., Head of Accessibility and Digital Inclusion for North America at Atos , and Lainey Feingold, a respected disability rights lawyer and author. They discussed the new book Digital Accessibility Ethics: Disability Inclusion in All Things Tech. Lainey co-edited the book with Chancey Fleet and Reginé Gilbert, MBA. It was published on 6 May. 39 authors from 10 countries wrote 32 chapters. James contributed the chapter on smart cities. The book introduces the Digital Accessibility Ethics Framework. It has 10 values — like trust, accountability, inclusion, sustainability, and privacy. Each value has actions to take and questions to ask. Lainey called this the power of the pause. Stop and ask: Who do I assume will use this? Who am I leaving out? How will someone who can't use a mouse use this? The framework works with any new technology. AI today. Something else tomorrow. The values stay the same. Three things shape culture inside a company: governance, leadership and procurement. Most new barriers come not from what we build, but from what we buy or bring in. Asking the right questions before we buy can stop this. Lainey said Atos is "high on the mountain". We work with some of the biggest companies in the world. We can share good practice in governance, leadership and procurement. That is why Sarika called Atos a first adopter of the framework. This work happens at the top, in our systems and leadership. It also happens every day, in the accessibility champions on every team. As Sarika closed: accessibility is not just a feature we add. It is something we practise every day. In every design choice.
