WHO Regional Office for Europe genopslog dette
A silent epidemic has now been recognized as a public health priority. The newly adopted landmark WHA resolution on steatotic liver disease marks an important step for a condition that may affect more than 1 in 4 adults globally — yet is often diagnosed only when the disease is already advanced. At #WHA79, I was pleased to join two important side events that carried the same message forward: recognition must now lead to implementation. My sincere thanks to Egypt’s Health Minister Prof. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Health Minister Dr Mohamed Hassany, the European Association for the Study of the Liver and the Global Liver Institute for hosting these events and helping make this hidden noncommunicable disease (NCD) a global health priority. What encouraged me most was the spirit of partnership in both rooms: patients, government officials, liver associations and other partners coming together around a shared agenda. Turning this momentum into results means integrating liver and metabolic health into NCD strategies, primary health care and universal health coverage – with stronger prevention, earlier detection and care linked to obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, unhealthy diets and alcohol consumption. To make this real, countries need sustainable funding and collaboration across sectors. As part of this effort, WHO/Europe is designating a new WHO Collaborating Centre at Imperial College London to strengthen data, training and country support. We know the drivers. We know the solutions. The task now is to implement health promotion policies at the scale people need.
