  • What happens when young leaders get direct access to global development conversations? New ideas. Honest perspectives. Better solutions. That’s the goal of the UNOPS Youth Engagement Platform, and we’re excited to welcome our second cohort of young changemakers from across the world. Together, they’ll help shape discussions on sustainable development, resilience, innovation and social inclusion. Because decisions about the future should include the people who will live it https://bit.ly/4nHKb0l #youthFAM

  • More from #WUF13 ...

Today at #WUF13 in Baku, I was pleased to join colleagues and partners for the UNOPS led side event “From Plans to Projects: Unlocking Urban Infrastructure Delivery in EU Accession and MIC Cities.” Our discussion reinforced an important point: sustainable urban transformation is not only about financing infrastructure, it is about ensuring projects are implementation ready, institutionally viable and designed around people and communities. I would like to sincerely thank speakers and partners for sharing their expertise and perspectives, including Slaven Radunovic, Minister of Spatial Planning, Urbanism and State Property of Montenegro; Mira Radenović Bojić, State Secretary, Ministry of European Integration of Serbia; Anzhela Makieva, Mayor of Irpin, Ukraine; Bojan Bogdanovic from the EBRD; Grzegorz Gajda from the European Investment Bank (EIB); and Vera Jovanović from UNOPS South East Europe. Special thanks also to Dyfed Aubrey Aubrey and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) for moderating and supporting this important discussion at the World Urban Forum and Sophie Djugeli and Katja Schaefer for being the driving force behind this. The strong collaboration between governments, municipalities, IFIs, UN agencies and development partners shows why partnerships are essential if we want to move from isolated projects toward integrated territorial development that delivers long-term impact at scale. At #UNOPS, we remain committed to supporting cities and countries in translating plans into investable, deliverable and sustainable urban infrastructure projects. #WUF13 #UrbanDevelopment #Infrastructure #Housing #SustainableCities #UNOPS #HABITAT #UrbanPlanning #EUAccession #RegionalDevelopment

  • Access to clean, reliable energy is transforming daily life in the Deboyne Islands, from helping children study after dark to supporting safer communities and stronger livelihoods.

Imagine a 22 hour boat trip from the district capital in Milne Bay in the Deboyne Islands in Papua New Guinea where 797 solar kits are creating opportunities, improving safety, and helping communities build brighter futures. The impact of reliable, clean energy is felt in everyday life. Children can now do their homework and study safely after dark. Teachers can prepare lessons without relying on torches. Women feel safer moving around their communities at night. And livelihoods, from weaving to small businesses, are able to benefit. Through the Climate-Resilient Infrastructure for Milne Bay Project, funded by the Australian Government and implemented by Sofia Olsson and UNOPS Papua New Guinea, communities across Panaeati and Panapompom Islands are building safer, stronger and more connected futures. Infrastructure is not only about what we build, but what becomes possible because of it. In the Deboyne Islands, clean energy is expanding opportunity, strengthening resilience, and helping communities thrive. #UNOPS #AustralianHighCommission ##YumiStapWantaim #SidebySideStepbyStep

  • From #WUF13 today.

Thankful for the opportunity to engage with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and partners on the urban development, infrastructure and resilience agenda at the 13th #WorldUrbanForum in #Baku. ECR Regional Director Tim Lardner and I reinforced the importance of connecting policy and finance- while real impact on communities is only leveraged through implementation and integrated project solutions on the ground. @GovernmentofAzerbaijan #WUF13 #UrbanDevelopment #Housing #Infrastructure #Resilience #Partnerships #Practicalsolutions Asian Development Bank (ADB) EBRD United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) @IRP #UNOPS

  • We look forward to the conversations coming out of the #WUF13 this week!

Up to 90% of infrastructure projects encounter significant implementation challenges, often due to gaps in early-stage project preparation. At #WUF13 in Baku, on 21 May, UNOPS and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) are bringing together governments, cities, finance and development partners to discuss how we can better bridge the gap between planning, financing, and delivery, particularly for affordable housing and urban infrastructure. I look forward to joining HE Sladen Radunović, Minister of Spatial Planning, Urbanism and State Property of Montenegro, Mira Radenović Bojić, State Secretary at the Ministry of European Integration of Serbia, Grzegorz Gajda from the European Investment Bank (EIB), Bojan Bogdanovic from the EBRD, Vera Jovanović from UNOPS, and other urban development experts. Moderated by Dyfed Aubrey from UN-Habitat. Event link in the comments. erfan ali Katja Schäfer #UNOPSatWUF #WUF13 #UrbanDevelopment #Infrastructure #Housing #Cities #SustainableDevelopment

On the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, we affirm a simple truth: Being who you are should never be a crime. Over recent decades, tremendous progress has been made in advancing equal rights for LGBTIQ+ people. Yet, around the world, we see concerted efforts to roll back their human rights – restricting freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, stoking hate, targeting human rights defenders, and slashing funds for essential services. For the first time in years, the number of countries criminalizing consensual same-sex relations has increased. Yet, when rights are under attack, LGBTIQ+ people are often among the first to suffer – scapegoated and exposed to greater risks to their safety, health and well-being. The United Nations is proud to stand with all members of the human family, without discrimination of any kind. Together, let’s choose safety, dignity, and equality for all.

Just wrapped up an incredibly energizing visit to our West Africa Multi-Country Office and I am returning with my cup full. 🌍✨ It’s great to see UNOPS delivering & building on the immense potential and momentum in the region: 🇨🇮Côte d’Ivoire: Deep-diving into impactful discussions and capacity building with suppliers at the UP Forum and connecting with key partners including the World Bank, and government ministries to align on our shared goals. 🇸🇳Senegal: Wrapping up at our hub in Dakar, where I had the privilege of meeting with our brilliant, dedicated teams who are driving our mission forward on the ground and hearing about the diversity of our portfolio, stretched across more than a dozen countries with completely different profiles! But beyond the people, the strategy, the partnerships, and the projects, what struck me most deeply on this trip was the leadership. After a visit to our Honduras hub, this is my second visit to an MCO led by a strong, powerful, intelligent, and creative woman - Silvia Gallo. What stands out isn't just their strategic brilliance, but how they lead: with empathy, with heart, and with kindness. There is sometimes a misconception that kindness in leadership is a vulnerability, or that empathy compromises performance. What I have seen proves the exact opposite. When leaders prioritize the growth, wellbeing, and psychological safety of their people, the results don't just follow—they multiply. Leading with heart doesn't dilute impact; it amplifies it. A massive thank you to the entire WAMCO team for the hospitality, the hard work, and the masterclass in empathetic leadership. #Leadership #WestAfrica #WomenInLeadership #EmpatheticLeadership #WAMCO #Dakar #CoteDIvoire #TeamWork #FutureOfWork

📍 Tunisia I have just wrapped up a very productive mission to Tunis, where alongside UNOPS Regional Director for Africa, Sanjay Mathur, North Africa MultiCountry Office Director, Nathalie Angibeau, and other colleagues, we officially marked 20 years of UNOPS impactful work in Tunisia. At a time of mounting global challenges, effective multilateral co-operation is vital. It was very encouraging to meet with senior government leaders and partners in Tunisia to reflect on the positive results of our work together, and to reaffirm UNOPS commitment to building on these achievements. A recap of key engagements 👇 🤝 Excellent meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Ali Nafti, and Minister of Economy and Planning, Samir Abdelhafidh. We discussed our shared commitment to multilateral co-operation, and reflected on the strong partnership – delivering results in areas like education, health, justice and the environment. 🏥 An excellent exchange with Minister of Health, Dr Mustapha Ferjani, who walked me through Tunisia’s rapidly advancing digital health transformation, which will expand access to quality healthcare for people across the country. 🦾 A fascinating visit to Charles-Nicolle Hospital, where I met the brilliant medical team who is working with a specialized surgical robot – procured by UNOPS as part of an initiative financed by the The World Bank Group . The robot is a first of its kind in Tunisia’s public health system and will significantly improve clinical outcomes for patients. A great example of the impactful role effective procurement can play in enhancing healthcare! 🤝 Valuable interactions with ambassadors and reps from many of UNOPS partners in Tunisia and North Africa (including International Financial Institutions, the UN, and several donor countries) 📰 I spoke with several media outlets to highlight UNOPS work in #Tunisia, while also discussing broader global challenges – including the far-reaching impacts of supply chain disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the urgent need to bridge the gap between ambitions and actions to address the climate crisis. 🇺🇳Finally, I met my fantastic team in Tunisia and North Africa and discussed strategic orientations to scale-up and speed-up our delivery. A big thanks also to United Nations Resident Coordinator Rana Taha for her leadership of UN Country Team and ongoing support for UNOPS work in Tunisia.
