Updates

  • Evidence matters — especially at a time when international cooperation is under pressure. Welthungerhilfe (WHH)'s new Impact Report 2.0 brings together results from 188 projects in 30 countries, drawing on 316 quantitative datasets and 79 qualitative analyses. The report shows what has changed across food security, nutrition, WASH, livelihoods, gender equality, civil society, agriculture, climate resilience, and humanitarian action — and where progress remains fragile. As Bettina Iseli, Chief Program Officer at WHH, puts it: “Evidence is key to building trust, fostering collaborative action, and achieving Zero Hunger on a Healthy Planet.” The findings are clear: ending hunger is possible when local systems are strengthened, communities shape solutions, and long-term partnerships support lasting change. 🔗 Read the full new WHH Impact Report, linked in our press release: https://lnkd.in/diKKyTEh

Gaza may be receiving less media attention than before — but the humanitarian crisis remains devastating. 🔴100% of the population in the Gaza strip is facing IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) or worse, and the risk of famine persists. 🔴 After more than two years of war, displacement, and hunger, many families are malnourished and traumatized. 🔴 Around 1.4 million people are living in overcrowded IDP camps, often in tents or under plastic sheeting. 🔴 Limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare is accelerating the spread of disease. Ongoing attacks and movement restrictions continue to block humanitarian access and essential services. Despite these conditions, our teams in Gaza keep going. Together with our partners such as Juzoor for Health and Social Development, WHH runs ten nutrition centers providing medical care, emergency therapeutic food for malnourished children, as well as protected spaces for mothers and babies. Here, families can find a brief moment of calm. 💚 We thank our teams for their tireless commitment — and everyone supporting their work.

🔴 The Bundibugyo Ebola variant is spreading rapidly across eastern #Congo. “Everyone knows that the official infection numbers are only the tip of the iceberg,” says Ursula Langkamp, WHH Country Director in DRC. The current outbreak (already the 17th the country has faced) began in the remote province of Ituri, where Welthungerhilfe also works. Healthcare infrastructure in the region is extremely limited, making containment especially difficult. The virus has since spread to the neighboring provinces of North Kivu and Tshopo. Suspected infections have already emerged in the major cities of Goma and Kisangani. Humanitarian organizations like Welthungerhilfe and Congolese partner organizations reacted immediately by introducing precautionary measures such as temperature checks and hygiene protocols. They have also adapted their work to protect communities: large gatherings have been suspended and physical distancing measures introduced. “People in the DRC know Ebola and understand very well how to respond,” Langkamp explains. The outbreak, however, is hitting a region already deeply affected by conflict and displacement. Nearly 10 million people in eastern Congo are already facing acute food insecurity. 💥“It is a disaster within a disaster."

The IPC also shows the severity of overlooked crises – such as in South Sudan. The world’s youngest country is facing major challenges, including ongoing conflict, displacement, drought, flooding, rising food prices and limited humanitarian access. As a result, communities are experiencing increasingly severe levels of hunger. ▪️ 5.3 million people are facing IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) levels of food insecurity and cannot meet essential food needs. ▪️2.5 million are in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency), facing large food gaps and very high levels of acute malnutrition. 🔴 Around 73,000 people are in IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophe), experiencing starvation and the collapse of livelihoods. The latest IPC analysis shows the situation has worsened since last year: 280,000 more people are facing acute food insecurity (IPC 3+) and 90,000 more children need treatment for acute malnutrition. ❗These developments are deeply worrying and must not be overlooked. More funding to alleviate the crisis is urgently needed. WHH has been working in South Sudan for many years and remains committed despite the challenges.

☝US-Israeli war on Iran: Even with an immediate peace deal and reopened shipping routes, hunger and poverty could still escalate. 🗨️ "The ceasefire has allowed the world to breathe a cautious sigh of relief. Despite its fragility, it raises hopes for easing pressure on global supply chains," says our expert Miriam Wiemers. "However, a peace deal between the warring parties has yet to materialize. And even if peace is negotiated immediately and all sea blockades are ended, the danger is far from over: an already critical food security situation could deteriorate further, triggering local hunger crises." ⛓️The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz since late February has set off a devastating chain reaction. What began as an energy and fertilizer shock is likely to result in crop failures and soaring food prices. ➤ Even under temporary ceasefire, supply chains will take months to stabilize; destroyed infrastructure may take years to be fully functional again. ➤ With the planting season approaching in many countries, the critical window for fertilizer application may close before fertilizer becomes available or affordable again. ➤ Debt-stricken countries struggle to provide safety nets or subsidies. ➤ Low-income households already struggle with reduced purchasing power. What needs to happen now: 📌 Achieve a swift and lasting end to the war through intensified diplomatic efforts and fully reopen trade routes, especially for critical agricultural inputs. 📌 Expand cash transfer programs and subsidies for agricultural inputs and food to protect vulnerable populations. 📌 Ensure financial liquidity for low-income countries to implement social protection measures and stabilize food prices. 📌 Invest in regenerative agriculture and local, sustainable fertilizer production to reduce vulnerability to future crises. #iranwar #foodcrises #foodsystems
