Info

The Munich Security Conference (MSC) is the world's leading forum for debating international security policy. It’s a venue for diplomatic initiatives to address the world's most pressing security concerns, bringing together heads of state and government, ministers, leading figures of international and non-governmental organizations, as well as high-profile representatives of industry, media, academia, and civil society. Since 2022, Ambassador Christoph Heusgen has been chairman of the MSC, a senior German diplomat, and former Foreign Policy and Security Adviser to Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. In addition to its annual flagship conference in Munich, the MSC regularly convenes distinguished events on particular topics and regions. It also publishes the Munich Security Report as well as a number of thematic briefs that provide analysis and recommendations on current and future risks. • 🎙️ “Everyone has a great plan until they get punched in the face.” Not the kind of line you expect from a minister. In our podcast, Benjamin Haddad quotes Mike Tyson to explain why relationships often matter more than perfect strategies. As France’s Minister Delegate for European Affairs, Haddad works in the engine room of European diplomacy: negotiating budgets, building coalitions, and navigating a continent under pressure—from war on its borders to shifting transatlantic ties. In a wide-ranging conversation on power, patience, and persuasion, our podcast host Florence Gaub speaks with Benjamin Haddad about what it means to practice diplomacy in 2026: 🔹why listening can be a strategic weapon 🔹why consensus is no longer the only model 🔹why diplomacy today feels less like chess—and more like poker Trust, he argues, is built slowly. Leverage comes together in decisive moments. And reputation may be a diplomat’s most valuable asset—more than any formal mandate. Whether you work in European affairs, security policy, or simply want to understand how decisions are made when the stakes are high, this episode is for you. 🎧 Listen to the latest episode of The Art of Diplomacy here: https://lnkd.in/dP3F9zUQ

  • At the beginning of April, we launched our new podcast “The Art of Diplomacy”. Its goal? Opening the often opaque world of diplomacy to a wider public through conversations with the people that are in the room for negotiations, crisis management, and conflict resolution. Guests in recent episodes included Rafael Mariano Grossi, Ian Bremmer, Dan Kurtz-Phelan, and Benjamin Haddad.   Guiding us through the world of diplomacy are our two hosts Florence Gaub and Joshua Yaffa. Here are some things you might not know about them (yet).   “The Art of Diplomacy” is available on all major podcast platforms. New episodes drop every other Friday: https://lnkd.in/dsEJH-nv

Strains in transatlantic relations impact coordination on China and, potentially, Europe's approach towards Beijing. There are limits to European-Chinese cooperation - not least China's support for Russia and Europe's current military reliance on the United States. But as Washington itself seeks to foster better economic and trade relations with China, including through this week's Trump-Xi summit, and the United States' reliability as a security and economic partner is increasingly questioned, the key issue moving forwards will be whether and to what extent Europe reassesses its relationship with China. Great to speak with Munich Security Conference and to participate in its Geoeconomics Roundtable in Washington in April. The Brookings Institution

  • From humanitarian concern to strategic imperative: why #FoodSecurity matters for global stability.   Often framed as a purely humanitarian issue, food security is also deeply intertwined with (inter)national security. With the Food Security Task Force, the MSC filled a crucial gap in the debate, bringing together decision-makers across sectors to develop geopolitically grounded, action-oriented recommendations to increase the resilience of global food systems.   Over the past two years, the Task Force convened for 4️⃣ official meetings addressing today’s most urgent food security challenges, including climate change, the United States' retreat from the international development sector, trade‑related vulnerabilities and risks, as well as the intensified role of food and related supply-chains in modern warfare. The meeting in Brussels took place at NATO headquarters, situating the issue of food security at the core of resilience and critical infrastructure debates in the defense Alliance.   Beyond its core meetings, the Food Security Task Force firmly embedded the issue into the MSC’s central formats: 3️⃣ Roundtables at the Munich Leaders Meetings in Nairobi (2023) and Rio de Janeiro (2024), as well as at #MSC2024, examining regional dynamics, agrifood supply‑chain resilience, and trade dependencies 3️⃣ Townhalls at MSC 2024, 2025, and 2026, focusing on food system transformation and food weaponization 2️⃣ Food Security Tracks at #MSC2025 and 2026, including curated Side Events, such as those co‑organized with the Council on Foreign Relations, highlighting pathways toward climate‑resilient agrifood systems   The Task Force also took the debate well beyond Munich, engaging across major international platforms: 2️⃣ Discussion formats at COP28 (Dubai) and COP29 (Baku), highlighting climate change, conflict, and economic shocks as key drivers of global hunger 3️⃣ High‑level panels at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Berlin, bringing a security lens to the agricultural community    The work culminated at #MSC2026, when German and Norwegian government officials, military, humanitarian, scientific, and private‑sector representatives signed a Joint Statement reflecting the two years of dialogue and progress.   One key takeaway: Food security is foundational to human dignity, economic development, and geopolitical stability. It is increasingly weaponized, revealing strategic vulnerabilities—investing in resilient agrifood systems is both a security and an economic imperative.   👉 Read the Joint Statement here: https://lnkd.in/g5G7aq8c We thank the following for their valuable input and continued dedication: Niels Annen, Åsmund Aukrust, Matthias Berninger, Benedetta Berti, PhD, Marianne Grosclaude, STEVEN HILTON, Meghan Latcovich, Ottilia Anna Maunganidze, Habib Ur Rehman Mayar, Erin Sikorsky, Vera Songwe, Maximo Torero, Daniela Vega, Ambika Vishwanath, and Michael Werz.

  • Few voices shaped debates in Munich as consistently as Senator John #McCain's. His speeches became defining reference points in debates on transatlantic relations, democratic resilience, and the future of the liberal international order. But how were his words perceived by those who worked closest with him?   💬 “He believed democracy was the best way to achieve human freedom and that it was our responsibility to promote and defend it.”—Christopher Coons   💬 “Senator McCain’s leadership style and faith in alliances are needed now more than ever.”—Evelyn N. Farkas   💬 “Anyone who knew John McCain knew that his core values were patriotism and integrity.“—Nancy Pelosi   📗 Our brand‑new Volume of Selected Key Speeches, edited by our CEO Benedikt Franke, features Senator John McCain’s most significant speeches at the MSC.   It offers deep insights into how the themes McCain raised in Munich continue to influence strategic debates well beyond his lifetime, including personal reflections of his character and the behind‑the‑scenes experience of working with him: https://lnkd.in/e3Za4ACx

  • 🎙️ Meet the Guest | Episode 1: Rafael Mariano Grossi   Thirty years ago, diplomacy followed a set of golden rules that everyone respected. Today? Rafael Grossi says: we live in a world where anything goes.   As Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a seasoned diplomat, Grossi has spent decades mediating some of the world’s most sensitive crises—even negotiating at the edge of nuclear disaster.   In an open and honest conversation on power, pressure, and what it takes to keep the world from the brink, "The Art of Diplomacy" host Florence Gaub speaks with the IAEA Director General, pulling back the curtain on his craft: why listening is a decisive skill in any negotiation, why impartiality can be a deeply lonely place, and what Lionel Messi has to do with diplomatic talent.    Grossi reflects on how diplomacy has been turned upside down, what still holds true, and how great diplomacy, it turns out, isn’t just about strategy—but about who you are.   Whether you’re facing a political crisis, already working in diplomacy, or simply have to manage difficult conversations at the dinner table: this episode is for you.   The first two episodes of "The Art of Diplomacy" are out now.
