The "Telecom Fiber" business line of Heraeus Covantics focuses on delivering innovative solutions based on fused silica for optical fiber manufacturing in telecom applications. Information travels as light. The more light signals you send in parallel, the more data you can carry. 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐬 create multiple light paths within a single strand of glass. 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐬 guide light through air instead of solid glass, allowing signals to travel faster. Small structural changes can unlock significant performance potentials.   Translating these concepts into stable, high quality mass production is far more demanding than the physics suggests. It requires deep materials knowledge, precise manufacturing and disciplined industrial execution.   During my visit to our Copenhagen site together with our CEO Frank Stietz, I saw how this transition from innovation to industrial scale is being achieved.   • ☝ Update for LUMIRing_iscte Multicore Fiber testbed: In the meantime, a cable of 26 km with nearly 2,000 km of different types of multi-core fiber made by Heraeus Covantics is installed in the yellow subway line of Metropolitano de Lisboa.   • Thanks to Rebecca Schmieg & Tobias Tieß for visiting ECOC 2025 | 51st European Conference on Optical Communication for us. It took place in Copenhagen, where we also produce our optical fibers: #HCF #MCF While the discussion about the winning silicon technology is going into ever new rounds, one thing seems certain: Novel fiber types are needed to replace electric connections between GPU, and to increase reach and density of optical channels. #HCF: Hollow-core fibers carry light at higher speed, enabling the distribution of compute capacity across multiple data centers in a region which is key to training large AI models. We have recently announced our collaboration with Microsoft Azure to produce such fibers at large scale. At #ECOC2025, new designs with low attenuation and multiple testbeds were presented. #MCF: Multicore fibers are finally breaking through in market acceptance, as hyperscale data centers are burdened under loads of optical cables while compute and storage density keep soaring. Heraeus started to invest into both #HCF and #MCF development over six years ago, and we are glad to see these products entering the market now. At Heraeus, we keep enabling communication beyond todays imagination.
