  • 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 University of Zurich 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: How is negotiation changing in today’s world? What became clear throughout the session is that we are not witnessing a gradual transition, but a fundamental shift. Negotiations are moving away from value-based arguments toward more interest-driven dynamics, shaped by pressure, timing, and strategic positioning. In this environment, being “right” is no longer enough. The focus is on outcomes. Together with our speakers, Matthias Schranner and Marzia Marastoni Ph.D. we explored what this means in practice, from the need to rethink traditional negotiation principles to adapting to more complex and less predictable environments.  We received many questions, which we will revisit in later posts. Some of the key takeaways from the Q&A: - The world is changing, and negotiators must adapt to new realities   - “Win-Win” outcomes are becoming less common in high-pressure settings   - Walking away is a strategy, not the end of a negotiation   - Negotiation skills can be developed through continuous practice and exposure What stood out most was the perspective of the students. With diverse backgrounds, global mindsets, and a strong willingness to engage, the next generation is already shaping how negotiations will be conducted in the future. We thank our partners at the VSUZH Impulsfabrik, UZH Zentrum für Krisenkompetenz (CCC), Uschi Backes-Gellner and all participants for an engaging and thoughtful discussion.
