Technology evolves in ways we can't always predict. Human connection and dialogue are essential to steer it for the benefit of all. At "Anticipating Technologies for a Safe and Humane Future", organised by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA as part of Switzerland's 2026 OSCE Chairpersonship, OSCE representatives gathered at the CERN Science Gateway in Geneva to explore how trust can be built at the intersection of dialogue, anticipation and emerging technologies. Ursula Bassler, Director of Stakeholder Relations at CERN, opened the day by welcoming participants to CERN, where dialogue across borders has been part of science's DNA for over seven decades. The opening panel focused on quantum computing, with Enrica Porcari, CERN's CIO and Marilyne Andersen, Director General of GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator - both co-chairs of the OQI Advisory Committee - joined by Thomas Greminger, Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. The window to shape quantum computing is open now, Enrica reminded the room. Seizing that moment requires the right environment. One where dialogue, neutrality and shared purpose come naturally. CERN has long been recognised as exactly that kind of trusted space, advancing science for peace. When the question of how to anticipate the era of quantum technology was raised, the Open Quantum Institute (OQI) was highlighted as a concrete example of how that anticipation is already being put into practice. Hosted at CERN, born at GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator and supported by UBS, OQI brings together researchers, the private sector, diplomats, and philanthropy stakeholders to ensure quantum technologies serve humanity. The European Commission-funded project, EPITA (Enabling Partnerships for Innovation & Accelerator Technology Advancement) kicked off yesterday at CERN. EPITA is a four-year-long project that involves a consortium of 42 partners from 15 countries. It will bring together a series of technological research and development initiatives into a coordinated and vision-driven programme. EPITA aims to foster a resilient European accelerator ecosystem. The project will develop 22 new prototypes of innovative accelerator technologies to support the performance and sustainability of accelerators and the research infrastructures that house them. CERN will bring to the project its unique expertise in accelerator technologies, gained by running the world’s largest and most powerful accelerator complex as well as multiple other accelerator-based experiments. CERN will also leverage its knowledge transfer expertise to support the consortium with an inventory of inventions and provide guidance on IP matters, including patenting opportunities, open sourcing and evaluating the feasibility and optimal routes for technology valorisation. Additionally, related to its experience in working on using accelerators for health and societal benefit, CERN's involvement in the project will help to define the needs of clinicians, medical physicists, and industry partners to guide translational research between research institutions and companies. The Physics Forecast 🌥️ At CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, high-energy beams collide in our giant detectors, generating vast amounts of data. This data is visualized through event displays. To create these displays, experiment teams use software to transform data into graphical objects, which are then rendered in a specialised application. Ever wondered what these displays reveal? Dilia from ATLAS Collaboration decodes the physics forecast. Disclaimer: This is a playful take on real event displays from the #LHC. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/efFMngmW

First steel beams for DUNE start to be lowered CERN Director-General Mark Thomson met with dignitaries and officials at Sanford Underground Research Facility on 7 May to mark a milestone for the international Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment Find out more: https://lnkd.in/g_t2Nq8j

DUNE cryostat installation     Last Thursday, I was delighted to join US Department of Energy officials, members of Congress, and others at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota to mark a major milestone for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), in which CERN is playing a key role.    The event signalled the start of installation for DUNE’s underground structure, which truly is massive. More than 5000 tonnes of steel will be lowered into an enormous cavern 1.5 km below SURF to build the structural elements of DUNE’s detector modules, or cryostats. Once complete, two cryostats will each house 17,000 tonnes of liquid argon at a temperature of –200°, serving as target and tracker for neutrino interactions generated a by a powerful neutrino beam sent from Fermilab, 1300 km away.     The cryostats were provided by CERN, based on a novel technological solution inspired by the liquified-natural-gas (LNG) shipping industry. CERN established a fruitful collaboration with French LNG firm Gaztransport & Technigaz to design a modular structure that could be transported down narrow shafts and assembled in the DUNE cavern, and developed an ingenious design for the cryostat insulation based on a membrane that can deform as a function of the thermal conditions.    CERN is also playing a pivotal role in the development of the DUNE prototype detectors in CERN's North Area, further demonstrating the strong partnership between CERN and the US.     It is amazing to see the progress with the underground infrastructure for this next-generation neutrino facility, which I had the pleasure of working on during its design phase. DUNE is brilliant example of international collaboration, and I wish the SURF and Fermilab/LBNF teams all the best for the critical steps ahead!    #DUNEscience #neutrinos #physics #ParticlePhysics #MilestoneForScience
