Vard Marine is internationally recognized as a supplier of specialized ship designs and associated services

About us

Vard Marine Inc. is a consulting naval architecture and marine engineering company established in 1983 and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of VARD Group AS in Norway, a Fincantieri company. The company itself has undergone numerous ownership changes, the most recent being the evolution of Vard Marine Inc. from the purchase of STX Marine (STXM) from STX Offshore and Shipbuilding Group in July 2014. This new ownership gives us access to a design and construction database from both VARD Group and Fincantieri. Since its inception, Vard Marine has established an impressive client base, including shipbuilders, ship owners, ship operators and government agencies. The company offers professional design engineering and shipbuilding technology services to clients throughout North America and internationally. The services provided cover a broad range, including all aspects of ship design and production technology; total equipment and service packages as required to support offshore and domestic shipbuilding activities; transportation, economic and technical feasibility studies; research and analytical investigations; supervision of model tests and full scale trials. Vard Marine specializes in the development of advanced technologies and its application to vessel designs for both commercial and military vessels. The wide range of vessel designs offered include offshore supply, anchor handling, offshore construction, offshore and coastal patrol vessels, passenger vessels and ferries, icebreakers, double hull tankers, research vessels, tugs, and floating plant barges, to name a few. To meet the high level of expertise required to provide innovative and effective solutions to clients' demands, Vard Marine employs more than one hundred people between its three offices in Vancouver, BC, Ottawa, ON and Houston, TX. The combined educational background and diverse practical experience of the Vard Marine staff makes for a dynamic team ready to face any challenge.

The VARD 9‑203 is a powerful example of what the global FINCANTIERI network delivers. Designed by Vard Marine Inc, part of the Fincantieri family, this polar‑capable, PC5 ice‑class vessel is mission ready for logistics support, search and rescue, and scientific research in some of the harshest environments on earth. With a 109.8‑meter length overall, 9,000 kW of power, and the ability to maintain 3 knots through 1 meter of ice, the 9‑203 demonstrates the engineering strength, endurance, and reliability that define our shipbuilding heritage worldwide. And that capability isn’t limited to international programs. Fincantieri Marine Group brings this same expertise, industrial capacity, and proven design lineage to the United States, strengthening the safety, security, and readiness of the nation. From complex combatants to advanced ice‑capable vessels, our network shows what’s possible when global innovation and American shipbuilding come together. #Fincantieri #FincantieriMarineGroup #VardMarine #FutureOnBoard #IceBreaker #Shipbuilding

  • Live at Mari-Tech 2026! Ross Titman is currently presenting: Concurrent Technical Session 2A: The Tale of Ship Conversions Vard Marine highlights how ship conversions can extend the value and capability of existing vessels by adapting them to new operational needs. A key example is the former Mangystau-2, originally built for operations in the Caspian Sea and later acquired by the Canadian Coast Guard in 2021, where it was renamed CCGS Judy LaMarsh and converted into a light icebreaker for Canadian service. VARD developed the engineering work package for the vessel’s refit, supported construction activities, and continues to provide in-service support as the ship enters operations. The case demonstrates how ship conversions can involve significant design and engineering changes to enhance fleet capability and meet evolving mission requirements. Cyber resilience is a fundamental part of modern vessel design and operations. As the maritime industry becomes increasingly digital and connected, cyber resilience is essential to support safe and reliable operations at sea. 🌊 In 2025, VARD delivered two of the world’s first vessels built and approved according to the Unified Requirements on Cyber Resilience from the International Association of Classification Societies. The vessels, North Star’s Grampian Kestrel and Purus’ Purus Chinook, marked an important milestone for maritime cyber and smarter, more connected vessel operations. So far, VARD has delivered 7 vessels according to cybersecurity notation requirements, with 24 more currently under construction. 📅 We look forward to discussing maritime cyber further during the June 4 virtual event hosted by Marine Log and SNAME on USCG cybersecurity rules and vessel design. 👉 Learn more about how we ensure cyber resilience at sea: https://lnkd.in/duhD85nK FINCANTIERI #VARD #MaritimeCyber #CyberSecurity #Shipbuilding #Digitalisation

  • A ship's first voyage is just the beginning of its story.   Markets shift. Regulations change. Operational requirements evolve. Vard Marine offers in-service support to help owners and operators navigate all of it, through refits, conversions, vessel life extensions and technical support that keeps fleets performing at every stage of their lifecycle.   We've done it for offshore supply, coast guard, wind energy, and more. When HORNBECK OFFSHORE® Services needed to convert a laid-up PSV, into a Wind Field SOV for the US East Coast, they came back to those who originally designed her. HOS Rocinante was delivered in November 2025 and is now on charter off New York.   That's one example. The capability applies fleet-wide.   Join us at MariTech 2026, Victoria BC, May 12–14 to hear more. On May 13th, 1:15 PM, there will be a technical session: The Tale of Ship Conversions by Ross Titman. Hope to see you there!
