Bridging the physical and digital worlds to improve consumer experiences and patient safety
About us
GS1 is a global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the design and implementation of global standards and solutions to improve the efficiency and visibility of supply and demand chains globally and across sectors. The best-known symbol of GS1 standards is the barcode, named by the BBC as one of “the 50 things that made the world economy”. GS1 is also well known for the creation and management of the GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), commonly used in barcodes, which uniquely identify products in the supply chain. Five decades ago, we started by helping food retailers do business more efficiently. Today, GS1 standards improve the efficiency, safety, and visibility of supply chains across physical and digital channels in 25 sectors, including retail, marketplaces, healthcare, and public policy. Our scale and reach – local Member Organisations (MOs) in 120 countries, 2 million user companies, and 10 billion transactions every day – help ensure that GS1 standards create a common language that supports systems and processes across the globe.

Recently, a few colleagues had the opportunity to spend time with Community Kitchen Brussels — an incredible local initiative preparing thousands of meals each week for people who are hungry, homeless, or otherwise vulnerable across the city. Meals are prepared at Holy Trinity Brussels and distributed through local partner organisations, including the Red Cross Humanitarian Hub, helping ensure that many people have access to food and essential support every day. It was a meaningful reminder that small acts of local, practical support can have a very real impact, and that behind every meal is a network of people showing up for their community. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy. If you’re based in Brussels and looking for a meaningful local cause to learn more about, Community Kitchen is well worth discovering.

Advancing the future of digital healthcare. Without a common language, #digitalisation fragments care. As #healthcare becomes more digital, risk increases when systems, devices, and #data can’t connect or are not consistently understood across care settings. Nnenna Osuji, Chief Executive Officer from North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, explains how shared global #standards ensure consistent #identification of products, #patients and locations, enabling safer recalls, smoother workflows and reduced risk as healthcare scales digitally. #Interoperability enables healthcare systems to move forward with confidence. Dr Nnenna’s key takeaways: ✅ Interoperability ensures systems understand the same information everywhere ✅ Using a common language enables the right product for the right patient, every time ✅ Global standards make recalls faster, #safer, and more reliable ✅ Shared standards reduce risk as healthcare moves toward #AI and advanced digital tools #GS1Healthcare #HealthcareTrustedData #PatientSafety

Preparing healthcare for #AI and digital transformation. AI cannot be safe without standardised #data. Digital healthcare is accelerating, but #innovation only works when systems can work together. From AI and robotics to intelligent medical devices, #safer, #smarter healthcare depends on #interoperability: the ability for systems to share and interpret information consistently across organisations and care settings. Peter O’Halloran, Chief Digital Officer at the Australian Digital Health Agency, explains why globally standardised data is the most effective way to reduce AI risk and prevent errors. When systems “speak the same language,” AI tools can compare like with like, support clinicians safely, and scale across healthcare environments. Interoperability, enabled by global #standards, is what allows #digital innovation to move from isolated tools to connected, safe, system-wide #care. #GS1Healthcare #HealthcareTrustedData #PatientSafety

One Product, One Barcode: for #safer, smarter care Multiple barcodes create confusion and increase the risk of error at the point of care. One Product, One Barcode replaces that complexity with #interoperability by enabling consistent identification, reducing errors, and improving #patient safety. Matt Sample, Senior VP, Manufacturer, Quality & Replenishment Operations at Cencora, highlights how standardised #identification: ✔ Eliminates scanning failures ✔ Enables faster #recalls and expiry checks ✔ Improves #efficiency across healthcare workflows Ultimately, it allows healthcare professionals to focus less on manual processes and more on patient #care. One product. One barcode. One trusted identifier that works seamlessly across systems. 🔗 Learn more about One Product, One Barcode https://bit.ly/3AEEPPj Safer, smarter care starts with a simple scan. #GS1Healthcare #HealthcareTrustedData #PatientSafety
