A timely reminder that graphite is not only a technical material, but a strategic one for Europe’s battery future. The visit to the VARTA Consumer Batteries plant in Dischingen highlighted the industrial scale at which graphite is already used in everyday battery production. At the same time, current EU policy is moving clearly in the direction of stronger circularity, greater recycling and lower dependency on imported critical raw materials through the Battery Regulation and the Critical Raw Materials Act. This is exactly why projects such as LIFE GRAPhiREC project are so relevant: they help turn these policy objectives into practical industrial solutions. Thank you again to VARTA Consumer Batteries for hosting this very insightful visit. #GRAPhiREC #LIFEproject #GraphiteRecycling #BatteryRecycling #CircularEconomy #CriticalRawMaterials #BatteryValueChain #SustainableIndustry #EUProjects
This week, LIFE GRAPhiREC partners met at the VARTA Consumer Batteries alkaline plant in Dischingen, Germany, for a productive Technical Working Group meeting focused on the next steps of the project. The meeting was followed by a visit to the model shop and the alkaline battery production plant, giving us valuable insight into the industrial context in which battery materials are processed and used. As we heard during the visit, production at the site is in the range of around 5 million batteries per day, corresponding to roughly 4 tonnes of graphite used in daily production. This scale shows why graphite matters. It is an essential battery material, and stronger circular solutions will be needed if Europe wants more resilient and competitive battery value chains. This is exactly where LIFE GRAPhiREC contributes. The project is working to recover graphite from lithium and alkaline battery waste and bring it back into new battery value chains through advanced recycling, validation and industrial cooperation. A sincere thank you to VARTA Consumer Batteries for hosting the meeting and the plant visit! #GRAPhiREC #LIFEproject #GraphiteRecycling #BatteryRecycling #CircularEconomy #CriticalRawMaterials #BatteryValueChain #SustainableIndustry #EUProjects
