This week we hosted our Founder Connect, 'From Discovery to Delivery: Real Pathways from Lab to Market' with CSIRO’s ON Program at The Commons QV. We brought together researchers, founders, investors, and operators from across Melbourne’s deep tech ecosystem to explore one core question: how do you actually move from lab to market in Australia? The honest answer from the panel was that there’s no single pathway, there are many. From spin-outs and startup formation, to industry partnerships, licensing, and hybrid models, the discussion reinforced that commercialisation is rarely linear, and often looks different depending on the technology, timing, and team. A huge thank you to our panellists: • Grace Bird (Main Sequence) • Kristy Battista (Jupiter Ionics) • Dr Megan Sebben (CSIRO) • Robert Scholten (MOGLabs) And to everyone who joined, especially the CSIRO ON alumni who took part in the rapid pitches, always one of the most energising parts of the night. Grateful to help facilitate these conversations and connect more of the research and startup communities in one room. And a huge thanks to Eike Zeller for making it happen 🎉 Looking forward to the next one. #FounderConnect #DeepTech #Startups #Innovation #CSIRO #AustraliaStartups #ResearchCommercialisation Lauren Morrey Anny Havercroft Doug English 🌱 Judy Anderson-Firth Zoe Myers

Fantastic night with The Startup Network on the topic, From Discovery to Delivery: Real Pathways from Lab to Market. It was energising to see such a genuinely diverse group in the room: researchers, entrepreneurs, founders, investors and industry representatives all engaging in the same conversation. One theme that stood out on the panel was the importance of ensuring research and technology are solving a real market need — something that is not only desirable for customers, but also has a clear path to financial viability. Ultimately, this is about solving problems that truly matter. What struck me most, though, was the sense of community in the room, especially at a time when the world can feel anything but stable. Two moments stayed with me: 1. A student asked how to ensure her ideas are solving meaningful problems, especially when they are first of their kind. That curiosity, willingness to question, and commitment to learning over knowing are exactly the qualities that underpin great founders. 2. And a 90-year-old participant, who had just celebrated his milestone birthday the day prior, shared his idea during the pitch session: a way for older people to record favourite songs alongside photos and stories, creating a powerful memory trigger for those experiencing conditions like Alzheimer’s. What an extraordinary reminder that contribution has no age limit. Seeing people at the very beginning and later stages of their working lives connecting, sharing, and learning from each other is a powerful reflection of what community can be. This is what it means to be human. #StartupEcosystem #community #solvingproblemsthatmatter Grace Bird (Main Sequence), Megan Sebben (CSIRO Kickstart), Robert Scholten (MOGLabs), Eike Zeller ☀️, Desmond John.
