What the Federal Budget Means for Skills & Workforce A few clear themes are emerging from this year’s Federal Budget for clean energy, electrotechnology, trades, apprentices and workforce development. Here's our quick take: 🔹 Electrification workforce investment continues Funding for electrification training, Solar Homes rebates, and the new Renewable Energy TAFE Centre of Excellence signals ongoing demand for electricians, renewable energy trades and clean energy skills. 🔹 Apprenticeships refocused Incentives are being redirected toward small and medium businesses and Group Training Organisations. Signalling a tighter link between funding and national workforce needs. 🔹 Migration and licensing reforms New investment aims to streamline skills recognition and licensing pathways for migrant workers. Future Energy Skills looks forward to continued collaboration with key stakeholders in this area to ensure quality and safety standards are maintained for the electrical industry. 🔹 TAFE and VET remain central to workforce growth Continued investment in Free TAFE, regional delivery and training quality reinforces the role of VET in building the clean energy and trades workforce pipeline. 🔹 Regional and inclusive workforce participation remains a focus There is growing emphasis on ensuring energy transition jobs benefit regional communities, women in trades, and workers facing barriers to employment. The Budget is less about launching new programs and more about reshaping existing systems to support long-term labour supply for the energy transition. As part of our Powering Women into Clean Energy Apprenticeships project, one of our key goals is to connect with schools and inspire young women to explore careers in electrotechnology. Over the past few months, our team have been busy visiting schools and attending career expos across the region, alongside project partners including NECA Education & Careers and MEGT (Australia) Ltd and in collaboration with Empowered Women In Trades (EWIT) Group Australia and Apprenticeship Support Australia. These visits are all about starting conversations, sharing real-world pathways, and showing young women what’s possible in clean energy and electrical trades. Below are a few highlights from recent visits. With Australia needing an estimated 14,000 additional electricians by 2030, building a more diverse and inclusive workforce is essential. Early engagement and education play a critical role in breaking down barriers, broadening aspirations, and ensuring young women feel supported to enter an industry that is welcoming, inclusive, and future-focused. #BuildingWomensCareers #poweringwomenintocleanenergy #Apprenticeships #CleanEnergy Miranda P. Last week, we attended an event hosted by AMES Australia to celebrate the official opening of their Flinders Street Education site and the launch of the Education Pathways to Aspirations Strategy. We heard about the work of AMES and the importance of supporting migrants in their pursuit of career opportunities. The event was attended by the Victorian Minister for Skills and TAFE, Colin Brooks, and the Federal Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs, Julian Hill. We look forward to contributing to discussions with AMES Australia on migrant skills recognition, including sharing our insights on effective pathways for recognising trade skills in the energy sector.
