"AI is everywhere except the bottom line." That’s a quote from the CEO of our newest alliance partner, AppliedAI, and it is the problem we aim to solve together. We are pleased to announce that McKinsey, QuantumBlack, and AppliedAI have come together in a collaboration to rapidly redesign and deploy enterprise workflows across regulated industries, with a primary focus on mid and back-office processes. This collaboration brings together McKinsey’s domain experience, QuantumBlack’s AI expertise, and AppliedAI’s Opus platform to drive productivity improvements at scale. In one recent deployment with a leading European chemicals manufacturer, a vendor onboarding process was reduced from roughly two weeks to under five minutes of active processing, alongside a more than 99% reduction in manual effort. Complex operational processes have remained one of the biggest constraints on enterprise speed, productivity, and adaptability. Organizations that can systematically redesign those processes and workflows will benefit from outsized productivity gains. Across advanced and emerging economies, the value of output per worker rose from roughly $19,000 in 1950 to about $85,000 today in real terms, even though annual hours worked fell by the equivalent of ten weeks. Capital per worker increased ninefold since 1925. Average years of schooling rose from about two to nearly nine. Those shifts were not isolated. They were elements of what A Century of Plenty: A Story of Progress for Generations to Come calls the progress machine — the combination of workers, skills, investment, invention, energy, cities, trade, and markets at scale. All these things came together to improve life outcomes, dramatically extending lives and reducing poverty. The question the book examines is whether productivity growth at comparable rates is still physically and economically possible in the century ahead.
